[MV Reaction/Review] NMIXX - O.O
JYP Entertainment, home to the popular groups TWICE, Stray Kids, ITZY, Wonder Girls, and 2PM, debuted another promising girl group from the unknown world of seas and ships, NMIXX. They came out with a single album called "Ad Mare" which contains four tracks including their debut song, O.O (pronounced as oh-oh).
Ships, Flowers, and Jellyfishes, And Mix!
The music video started with a dystopian feel. NMIXX, wearing neutral-colored, jellyfish-looking outfits, and boots, danced in front of a big pirate ship where they come from. It moves to an obvious "zero Coke" advertisement and the girls showing off their strong "baila, baila, baila" (dance, dance, dance) in the chorus.
They shouted "NMIXX!" (sounds like "and mix!") and KYUJIN, who is going through the blocks, suddenly moved to another dimension and forcefully opened a Donut shop. Along with the change in music, they also changed into bright, extravagant and colorful dresses. Jellyfish outfits out, real jellyfishes and other sea creatures in!
Suddenly, they are in in the sky floating after they shout their hope to be a "superhero". And it goes back to the first part, now dancing in front of the Donut shop bragging about their superb vocal runs and adlibs.
My reaction is O.O
Contrary to most reactions and what I see on SNS, I liked the song the first listen.
Maybe it is because I am a big fan of Girls' Generation's I GOT A BOY and I still dance to aespa's Next Level that I did not find it as dramatic as everyone thought. In fact, I enjoyed the changes and the middle section of the song. If they continued the first part until the end, I'll probably get bored and put them in line with other 4th generation KPOP groups.
Now I wonder if what BAE means in "it's just a teaser" is they will give us a non-experimental song next that will hook us to the NMIXX ship. It does feel like something they release to get a big reaction, like EXO's Wolf, to bring us to a Song of the Year-worthy, EXO's Growl.
Even so, I still like O.O. It's something I will play to hype myself up every morning. Very empowering. Their voices are really nice too. Shoutout to LILY because her voice really gave me goosebumps on their first Music Bank performance.
The song moves with the lyrics
I noticed they did storytelling through their music. It started first with a strong sound when NMIXX is challenging us to "watch out" for them. Screamed "NMIXX!" and we're in a dream, the girls singing for you to wake up and follow them because they will "never let us down". Then it went back to the strong sound when they said, "now is the time, and finally, we'll win."
